Q&A With Ed Chevy

Q: How has American Sign Language (ASL) been used in writing of your most recent album, Turn It Up Louder?

I use ASL interactively with the music. I am able to express the concept of the story through signing, acting and pantomiming. I composed a storyboard about sign language, deafness, hearing aids, finding love in a silent way, the frustration to open up and allow hearing people to accept us, etc.

Steve Longo and Ed Chevy In StudioOnce I master my story that I want to express in ASL, I would find my rhythm. Then I worked around, playing my music to find the beat and finally, writing down my English. The process requires a routine of drama immersion to make visual language into English.

Q: What’s your favorite track on Turn It Up Louder?

Angel of Darkness. It's vividly designed as a grand opener. With only one line to growl out loud, it's supposed to be a rock theater show with laser lights, blacklights, strobe lights, and dry ice. It's a story about a deaf female goddess, bringing darkness to light.
